Garage Door Sizes UK: Standard Single and Double Sizes

George Thompson |

What are the standard garage door sizes in the UK?

There is no single standard size, but two come up again and again: 7ft x 6ft 6in (2134 x 1981mm) and 7ft x 7ft (2134 x 2134mm). Single up and over doors run from 6ft 6in to 10 feet wide. Sectional and roller doors come in a wider spread of sizes, and many are made to the size of your opening. For double garages, we supply sectional doors and roller doors.

Manufacturers quote slightly different millimetre figures for the same size. 7'0" is 2134mm, which is the figure Hörmann uses for its 7'0" high doors. Garador's sizing table gives the same 7'0" height as 2136mm, and a 6'6" width as 1984mm rather than 1981mm. If you are ordering a Garador door, work from Garador's figures.

Garage door sizes by door type

Door type Widths Heights
Up and over (Garador range) 1984 to 3049mm (6'6" to 10'0"), for single garages 1830 to 2286mm (6'0" to 7'6")
Up and over (Hörmann Series 2000) From 1981mm (6'6"), in 6" steps 1981mm (6'6") and 2134mm (7'0") as standard
Sectional (Hörmann LPU 42, Wisniowski) Standard and special sizes from Hörmann, made to measure from Wisniowski, for single and double garages Standard heights from Hörmann, made to measure from Wisniowski
Roller (Aluroll Secureroll Classic) Made to measure, up to 5500mm wide Up to 5200mm, with a maximum door area of 20m²

Up and over sizes are internal frame sizes: the gap inside the frame, not the brickwork opening.

Double garage door widths

For a double garage, the doors we supply are sectional garage doors and roller garage doors, because both can be made to suit a wide opening. Our Wisniowski sectional doors are made to measure for single and double garages, Hörmann's LPU 42 sectional doors come in standard and special sizes, and the Aluroll Secureroll Classic roller door goes up to 5500mm wide.

Will my car fit?

If you park a car or other vehicle in your garage, measure it as well as the opening: its width with the door mirrors out, and its height if it has roof bars or a roof box. When an up and over door is fitted between the brickwork, its frame sits inside the opening, so the space you drive through is the door size rather than the full opening. Hörmann says sectional doors offer "up to 14 cm more passage width than up-and-over doors", which can make the difference with a larger modern car.

Building a new garage?

If you are building a new garage, you can plan the opening around the door rather than the other way round. An opening built for a standard size gives you the widest choice of up and over doors, and made-to-measure sectional and roller doors can be made to suit it. Check each manufacturer's headroom and side room figures before the lintel goes in, and allow for the car you plan to park there.

What to do if your opening is between sizes

Measure the opening three times across and three times up, and work from the smallest figure. Then there are three things to look at:

  1. Choose a made-to-measure door. Our Wisniowski sectional doors, Teckentrup and Wisniowski side hinged doors, the Hörmann RollMatic T and the Aluroll Secureroll Classic are all made to the size you give us, within each door's size limits. The Teckentrup side hinged doors, for example, go up to about 2500mm wide and 2250mm high. Hörmann sectional doors come in standard sizes, with the sizes in between made as special sizes.
  2. Fit behind the opening. For its up and over doors, Hörmann says its steel frame fitted behind the opening "allows for a wider range of structural openings to be spanned", which can save ordering a special size.
  3. Allow the fitting clearance. If an up and over door goes between the brickwork, Garador says to add at least 10mm to the overall frame width and 5mm to the overall frame height.

Not sure which applies? Send us your measurements and a photo of the opening and we will tell you which doors fit.

How to measure your garage opening

Measure the brickwork opening, not your old door or its frame, and write every figure down in millimetres.

  1. Width. Measure across the opening at the top, the middle and the bottom. Use the smallest figure.
  2. Height. Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the lintel, the beam above the opening, on the left, in the centre and on the right. Use the smallest figure.
  3. Headroom. Measure from the underside of the lintel to the ceiling or the lowest beam. A Hörmann sectional door fitted behind the opening needs from 100mm (115mm with an electric operator) up to 210mm, depending on the track it is fitted with. Teckentrup's CarTeck sectional doors need 120mm with an electric operator. Roller doors need room for their box: the Hörmann RollMatic T box measures 290mm to 360mm depending on the door height, and the Aluroll Secureroll Compact box starts at 205mm.
  4. Side room. Measure the wall on each side of the opening. Allow 90mm each side for a Hörmann or Teckentrup CarTeck sectional door fitted behind the opening. The RollMatic T needs 80mm or 110mm each side, depending on the door size.
  5. Depth. Measure from the opening back to the rear wall or the first obstruction, because up and over and sectional doors run back under the ceiling when open. With a ProMatic or SupraMatic electric operator, Hörmann gives a distance back of 3200mm for its Series 2000 retractable up and over doors up to 2500mm high.

Our how to measure page also lists what else to note, such as a sloping ceiling or anything inside the garage that could get in the way.

Manual or electric?

Many doors can be ordered with an electric operator or have one added later. The Hörmann 2002, for example, can be upgraded with automatic operation. If you plan to add one, allow for the operator figures in steps 3 and 5. Our Hörmann ProMatic 4, SupraMatic E 4 and SupraMatic P 4 operators are on our automation page.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Measuring the old door instead of the opening. The old door and frame do not tell you the size of the opening, so always measure the brickwork itself.
  • Forgetting the vehicle. Measure the car you will park, not just the opening.
  • Overlooking depth. Width and height get the attention, but a garage that is too short is a common reason a door will not fit, especially with an operator.
  • Ignoring a sloping floor. If the floor slopes or has a raised threshold, allow for it when you measure the height.
  • Rounding up. Always choose your size from your smallest exact measurement.

Garage door size questions

What are the standard sizes for single garage doors in the UK?

Two of the most common single sizes are 7'0" x 6'6" (2134 x 1981mm) and 7'0" x 7'0" (2134 x 2134mm). Up and over doors also come in narrower and wider steps. Garador lists single widths from 1984mm (6'6") to 3049mm (10'0"), measured inside the frame.

What is the typical size of a double garage door in the UK?

There is no fixed double size. A double garage door is either made to suit the opening or chosen from a manufacturer's standard sizes. For double garages we supply sectional doors and roller doors. Our Wisniowski sectional doors are made to measure for single and double garages, and the Aluroll Secureroll Classic roller door is made up to 5500mm wide.

What is the standard height of a garage door in the UK?

Hörmann lists 6'6" (1981mm) and 7'0" (2134mm) as the standard heights for its Series 2000 up and over doors, with some styles in 6'4", 7'6" and 8'0". Garador's sizing table runs from 6'0" to 7'6", including 6'8" and 7'2", and gives its 7'0" height as 2136mm.

Does the garage door size include the frame?

No. Up and over doors are sold by nominal size, which is the gap inside the frame. Garador's pre-framed doors add 110mm to 140mm to the width and 58mm to the height. Hörmann's steel frame adds 140mm to the width and 57mm to the height. Check the overall frame size before you order.

What are the dimensions of a standard roller garage door?

Roller garage doors are usually made to measure rather than sold in fixed sizes. The Aluroll Secureroll Classic 77mm we sell is made in the UK to the opening dimensions you give us, up to 5500mm wide and 5200mm high, with a maximum door area of 20m². That covers single garages and wide double openings.

How much headroom does a sectional garage door need?

It depends on the make and the track the door runs on. A Hörmann sectional door fitted behind the opening needs from 100mm above the opening (115mm with an electric operator) up to 210mm, depending on the track, plus 90mm of side room. Teckentrup's CarTeck sectional doors need 120mm of headroom with an electric operator, and 90mm of side room.
